PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER - PORTLAND, OR
Purpose of Position

You will be responsible for working with a team to develop switchgear and related power products. Product designs include components like transformers, reactors, protective elements, surge arrestors and automation systems, in addition to core components like current carrying conductors and circuit breakers.

Essential Functions:

  • Create Designs, Bills of Materials, and Test plans for new IEM switchgear products. Designs should be optimized for low cost, high reliability, and ease of manufacturing.
  • Define and document new product development project specifications and scope based on input from IEM sales, engineering and senior management.
  • Take a creative approach to optimizing test sample design to reduce construction costs and facilitate efficient testing.
  • Coordinate with outside resources and internal materials procurement and production teams to manage project schedules and provide regular updates to stakeholders.
  • Provide accurate and comprehensive project closeout documentation including product capabilities, limitations and application details.
  • Work with Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL’s) and 3rd party test labs to define, plan and schedule equipment evaluation and testing based on applicable standards and code.
  • Travel to testing laboratories to complete tests for products. Examples of applicable tests: Short Circuit, BIL, Seismic, Heat Rise, Functional Control tests, & Failure Sequence Tests
  • Analyze project requests and suggest alternate design/testing methods that may be more cost effective, whenever possible
  • Identify solutions, solve technical problems, and propose alternate designs where design issues exist with current products. Work with sales, production or clients to optimize IEM’s product offering.
  • Work with compliance and quality-control teams to define certification processes for new products (traceability, labeling, etc.)

Education and Experience:

  • A BSEE, BSME or equivalent and a minimum 2 years of experience designing MV/LVSwitchgear or Related Products.  This should include familiarity with three-phase electric power design concepts as applied in distribution systems, with control and protection strategies.
  • Familiarity with the NRTL evaluation and certification processes, as well as UL / IEEE standards for various types of electrical equipment (UL 891, 1558, 508A; IEEE C37.20, etc.)
  • Must be a team player with strong verbal/written communication skills and self-motivated with an ability to work independently without supervision.

Salary Range:

$85,000 - $110,000 (DOE)
